REFLECTION

1.Reflect on the process of developing leadership level knowledge, skills, and practices in this competency. What has been especially impactful/meaningful/important to you personally and professionally?

To be a good counselor educator and supervisor one needs to understand the counselor role as well. One thing that impacted me in my doctoral journey related to counseling was building my counseling skills and learning more about my own theoretical approach. As an eclectic counselor I never put much thought on the theory I used, however, in my doctoral journey and research, I learned more of the theory that guides my counseling and in turn my supervision and teaching.

  1. Describe an area of strength that you have developed while in the program in this area of competence. What is one way you plan to utilize this strength in your vocation?

My strength as a counselor is that I am very compassionate and care a lot about my clients. To assure their wellbeing, I have learned that self-care is critical, especially for someone that works with trauma to assure bicurious trauma does not impact me as well as to take care of myself from burnout or compassion fatigue. One thing I learned in the program to help me with self-care was creating a visual arts journal which I continue to implement in my life post the creative arts course and plan to share with my future students and supervisees.

  1. Describe an area of challenge/growth opportunity in this area of competence. What is your plan to develop excellence in this area?

One thing I notice is that people all view case conceptualization differently. The way I was taught in my master level is not the same as my doctoral. I must learn to be true to the way I conceptualize a case while still including all the pieces we were taught. I will continue to work on this by continuing to build case studies for students as well as by working on my own cases and continue reading on the topic.

  1. Reflect on how faith in Christ relates to this competency.

The Bible talks about how Christ is will send us the Great Counselor. The Bible also talks about Christ being there for us. Therefore, to follow in His footsteps and to be guided by the Holy Spirit we ought to be compassionate. As a counselor, it is best to be led by the Holy Spirit in session even if the person is not a believer to assure compassion, understanding, and love.
